1. Introduction
Vietnam is an incredibly welcoming country, but like any destination, a little preparation goes a long way. We have compiled the most up-to-date information regarding visas, currency, connectivity, and local etiquette to help you travel with confidence and ease.
2. Visa Policy
E-Visa (Electronic Visa)
The Best Option Vietnam now offers a 90-day E-Visa for citizens of all countries and territories. This is the most convenient option for tourists.
- Validity: Up to 90 days (Single or Multiple entry).
- Cost: ~$25 USD (Single entry) or ~$50 USD (Multiple entry).
- Processing Time: Typically 3 working days (we recommend applying at least 1-2 weeks in advance).
- Official Website: Only apply through the National Immigration Portal. Avoid third-party agency sites to prevent extra fees.
Visa Exemption (Visa Waiver)
Citizens of specific countries can enter Vietnam without a visa for a limited time (usually 45 days under the new policy).
- 45 Days Exemption: United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Russia, Japan, South Korea, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Belarus.
- 30 Days Exemption: Most ASEAN countries (Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, etc.).
- Note: Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of arrival.
Visa on Arrival (VoA)
Visa on Arrival is now less common due to the convenience of the E-Visa. It is generally only recommended if you are booking a last-minute organized tour package that handles the approval letter for you.
3. Practical Information
Currency & Payments
- Currency: Vietnamese Dong (VND).
- Exchange Rate: $1 USD ≈ 25,000 VND.
- Cash is King: While luxury hotels and malls accept cards (Visa/Mastercard), cash is essential for street food, local markets, and small cafes.
- ATMs: widely available in cities. Look for VPBank, TPBank, or Citibank for higher withdrawal limits.
Sim Cards & Internet
- Connectivity: 4G/5G is excellent and affordable.
- Providers: Viettel (best coverage in remote areas/mountains), Vinaphone, and Mobifone.
- Where to buy: You can easily buy a SIM card at the airport arrival hall ($10-$15 for a data plan) or at official stores in the city. eSIM is also a great option.
Electricity & Plugs
- Voltage: 220V, 50Hz.
- Plug Types: Vietnam typically uses Type A (two flat pins), Type C (two round pins), and Type G (UK style – less common).
- Tip: A universal travel adapter is recommended, although most hotels have multi-socket outlets.
Getting Around
- Ride-Hailing: Grab is the “Uber” of Southeast Asia. It’s safe, transparent (fixed price), and supports card payments.
- Taxis: Reliable brands include Mai Linh (Green) and Vinasun (White).
- Traffic: Crossing the street in Vietnam can be intimidating. The secret is to walk slowly and steadily; do not stop or run. Drivers will weave around you.
